Can Diet and Exercise Beat a Tummy Tuck?

SEVERAL dozen would-be cosmetic-surgery patients gathered at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan recently to hear a lecture on the latest procedures by a prominent plastic surgeon.

But the surgeon, Dr. Gerald Pitman spent the first 20 minutes of his talk trying to discourage the audience from having cosmetic operations in the first place.

”Ask yourself ‘Can you avoid it?’ ” Dr. Pitman said to the audience last month. ”What kind of lifestyle changes can you make?”

Dr. Pitman often asks the same questions during initial consultations with patients at his Upper East Side office, to find out whether they have tried diet and exercise to improve satisfaction with their appearance before choosing surgery.

Tummy Tuck and Liposuction – They Are Different and Complimentary

Loose hanging skin in the region of the abdomen is very resistant to any kind of exercise. It is very distressing for the person, because it prevents wearing of proper clothes, and is visible as a hanging flab of tissue. This is particularly more common in post pregnant women, where the expanded abdominal skin fails to retract back to its normal contour. This is however less common in men.

The surgical procedure done in this condition is known as a tummy tuck or an “abdominoplasty”. A tummy tuck involves removal of the excess hanging skin along with the underlying fat to give a flat and toned abdomen. This procedure tightens the abdominal muscles and gives a new and rejuvenated abdomen. The position of the umbilicus is also shifted to a more natural position.

The scar

Patients are worried about the scar of the tummy tuck. It is reassuring to know that the scar can be placed according to the type of clothing that the patient prefers to wear, and it is not visible from under the clothing. Thus, if the patient wants to wear a particular type of bikini, we can site the scar accordingly. The scar can be shaped according to the type of jeans or dresses, which the patient may prefer. The scar is fine and tends to mature a lot over time.

We have all been there. That moment. Maybe it’s the first trip to the pool in a long time, or maybe it’s that morning trip to the shower, where we get a fleeting glimpse of ourselves in the mirror. We all hold a certain idea about how we look in our minds. Often, the way we view our looks is locked in at a particular moment in our lives, often when we are at our peak, in top shape and most styled.

However, in a flash, we are confronted with our bodies as they look. Years of working in an office or caring for kids has left us with little time for trips to the gym. Immediately, we see that gut that we can swear was not there the previous morning. So what can we do to make our internal body image look more like our external reality?

The first step, of course, is diet and exercise. There is no weight loss treatment that is as safe and effective as a balance of exercise and diet. However, even diet and exercise have their limits.

Nowadays, thanks to medical technology, people who know that their self esteem would be much improved if they could change something about their physical appearance that was bothering them have more options.

Specifically, these people become candidates for an overall category of procedures that are known as plastic surgery. The role of this kind of surgery has become more prevalent in various areas of society, particularly in fields where the patients are often in the public eye. However, to think that those are the only kinds of people who have plastic surgery done is a misconception. Instead, there are people from many different backgrounds who have this kind of surgery done.

One of the most commonly done forms of plastic surgery is rhinoplasty, also know as a nose job. This is a procedure in which the nose, which is primarily composed of cartilage, is restructured so that it is more balanced with the features of the face. Usually, the corrections have something to do with minimizing bumps on the nose, or the overall size of the nose minimized.
