When someone mentions that they are considering having breast augmentation surgery, it is quite common to automatically think of silicone implants; these are the more popular type of implants, whilst saline implants are also available. But you never really think too much about how it became possible in the first place.

As with many medical procedures both small and large, breast augmentation has gone through its own fair share of trials and errors. In fact, the first attempt occurred well over a hundred years ago.

There was no such thing as silicone back then, and the substance of choice for these early and alarming attempts was paraffin wax. This was introduced via an injection, but the results were far from successful. From here, the attention of those trying to perfect this surgery turned to fat. It was considered that if fat could be taken away from areas which naturally gain excess weight such as the buttocks, that fat could be transplanted into the breasts to make them fuller. The idea was good in theory, but in fact it didn’t work.

It was becoming clearer by this point that what was needed was something that was solid and that would stay firmly in place. This was something that neither the fat nor the paraffin wax was capable of. We had to wait until the 1960s to achieve a real leap forward in the search for the perfect solution for breast augmentation surgery. That was when silicone implants was to be introduced.

As you would expect, the implants have altered a lot since they were first invented. The thickness of the outer shell is nowhere near as thick as it used to be, and there is still a lot of continuing research to try and improve on what is currently available.

Cohesive silicone gel implants are routinely used today, and they are a far cry from how things first started out. Instead of the possibility of a very uneven result, these modern implants provide the natural curves that women want and it’s easy to understand why they are so popular.

It is also the case that those women who consider a boob job have a wide choice of qualified surgeons who can perform the procedure for them. When the idea first came about over a century ago, only a handful of people were experimenting to see what would work best, and what didn’t.

Nowadays breast augmentation is expertly taken care of and it is always advised that you speak with your surgeon before the procedure takes place.
