Eyelid Surgery – Correction of Tear trough and Blepharoplasty
Tear trough is the hollowness that develops in the lower eyelid, as we age, and makes the eyes look older than they are. There is a sadness associated with these eyes, and surprisingly is also found in younger individuals. Correction of the tear trough deformity is a difficult issue, having said that remedial measures are available in the form of fat injections and actual blepahroplasty with vascularised fat transfer
Fat Injection
Autologous fat transfer is an established technique to correct the tear trough deformity. It is not very popular among plastic surgeons because a lot of us fear that fat tends to get absorbed and leaves a lumpy bumpy deformity; however, when properly done. This is not so common and gives good results. The important things here and issues that clinch the issue is the technique of fat harvestation. It is important to select fine canulas to harvest fat. It is said that fat around the knees is ideal for this problem, since here the amount of fibrous tissue is the minimum and fat tends to be smaller and looser in its consistency. Abdominal fat tends to have a lot of fibrous tissue, and the fat globules are much larger.
