How Did Breast Surgery Develop Through Time?

When someone mentions that they are considering having breast augmentation surgery, it is quite common to automatically think of silicone implants; these are the more popular type of implants, whilst saline implants are also available. But you never really think too much about how it became possible in the first place.

As with many medical procedures both small and large, breast augmentation has gone through its own fair share of trials and errors. In fact, the first attempt occurred well over a hundred years ago.

There was no such thing as silicone back then, and the substance of choice for these early and alarming attempts was paraffin wax. This was introduced via an injection, but the results were far from successful. From here, the attention of those trying to perfect this surgery turned to fat. It was considered that if fat could be taken away from areas which naturally gain excess weight such as the buttocks, that fat could be transplanted into the breasts to make them fuller. The idea was good in theory, but in fact it didn’t work.

Learn More About Liposuction

There is no shame in wanting a trim and toned body, but if you have been following a carefully controlled diet as well as slogging it out in the gym and all to no avail, you may feel like you have ran out of options.

If despite your best efforts you find that exercises do not help to reduce your problem areas then it may be worth considering liposuction and body shaping surgery.

Liposuction is a procedure which is widely used to improve your body shape by removing unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. As your body grows older you are more likely to store fat in specific areas and despite vigorous exercise and dieting it is sometimes too difficult to shift this excess weight.

Getting Ready For Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is always stressful, even if it is a minor procedure. Unlike other forms of surgery that are internal procedures, plastic surgery affects your appearance. And even if you are not at all vain, we are all concerned about how we look. Of course, in the case of plastic surgery to repair disfigurement (either congenital or caused by accident) the result is expected to be an improvement, so there is less stress.

In the case of elective plastic surgery, the patient has chosen to undergo the procedure in the expectation of improvement in his or her appearance. Remember that even with the best of surgeons and the simplest of procedures, nothing can ever be guaranteed in plastic surgery. Never make a rash decision to go in for it. If you have lived your life with something you hope plastic surgery can correct, another six months while you consider the implications is not much. Before you decide, ask your doctor not only what are the chances of success, but also details of exactly how the affected part of the body will look after the surgery is completed. Ask about side effect and the possibility of the changes made by the plastic surgery themselves changing over time.

Thermage® Treatments: Skin Tightening Without Surgery

When your mirror starts to tell you that age is creeping up, it can certainly help to use good creams and lotions for moisturizing the skin. And a sunblock will help prevent future wrinkles. But there are more causes of lines and wrinkles than just sun damage or dryness of skin. An important one is how much collagen is present in your skin. Collagen in the Skin Skin has three layers:

• Epidermis on the top – consisting of dying and dead cells in the process of being sloughed off
• The dermis – containing many structures such as hair follicles, sweat glands, blood vessels, oil glands and a matrix of collagen strands for support
• The sub-cutaneous layer – containing fat cells and more structures such as blood vessels

Can I Have More Than One Cosmetic Procedure At Once?

If you’re considering plastic surgery
, you might be wondering if you can take care of several issues at the same time, rather than having all your work done piecemeal. Some procedures seem to go together, after all, and it seems like it might be more efficient to have them done at the same time.

In fact, this is often true. Many plastic surgeons will combine plastic surgery procedures, depending on the results you wish to achieve and the procedures you have chosen to undergo. Your chosen doctor can tell you what his or her policy is on combining procedures, and if your case will benefit from this approach.

Why Combine Surgeries?

Is Botox® Safe For The Body?

More than 4.5 million people took advantage of the wrinkle-reducing power of Botox® injections in 2007, making it the number-one type of minimally invasive cosmetic procedure performed. Those latest figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons speak volumes about the growing popularity of this FDA-approved treatment — one that has been used safely and effectively for more than 15 years.

Still, if you’re considering Botox and have questions about its safety, it’s important to get the facts.

The Basics of Botox

Botox® is the product name for the cosmetic form of the botulinum toxin, a protein produced by the bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum. It was first approved by the FDA to treat problems with the eye muscle. In 2002, following rigorous tests, the FDA approved Botox as a way to temporarily remove fine lines and wrinkles.

Radiance, Radiesse, And Restylane – The Pros And Cons

If you prefer a needle to a knife, then modern injectibles are for you. Botox and collagen are still the non-invasive plastic surgery of choice, but they require regular trips to the doctor’s office. Injectibles are just as effective but last longer.

Restylane and Radiesse have been around since the mid-1990’s. They are special derma fillers that are injected into targeted areas of the face and body filling in lines where fat has dissipated. The FDA approves both products in the United States as safe cosmetic fillers. The treatments are quick, effective and long lasting. After a 30-minute appointment in the doctor’s office, patients can expect to resume their normal activities almost immediately.

Restylane

Restylane has been in use since 1996 and is currently the most requested filler available. It’s used primarily to correct thin lines around the mouth and forehead. It restores fullness in the face by correcting moderate to severe wrinkles. Restylane is also effective in transforming thin lips into a full, voluptuous smile. The treatment can last as long as 6 to 12 months and costs less than other popular injectibles such as Radiesse.

Plastic Surgery For At-Risk Breast Cancer Patients

An article appearing in the January/February issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal suggests that patients considering elective breast surgery would gain ultimately improved results after being assessed for breast cancer risk. The article also provides guidelines for plastic surgeons to help women determine breast cancer risk, as well as the most successful options for surgical intervention and breast reconstruction.

There are many risk factors associated with breast cancer, family history probably being the most prevalent. Although these risk factors don’t always mean any woman can or cannot get diagnosed with breast cancer. Estimates predict one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. That is why it is so important to have regular screenings, either using MRI or mammography to detect the presence of breast cancer, and even genetic testing to determine the risk of developing breast cancer in the future.
